Care of injured and Orphaned Animals

WCT supports the rehabilitation and release of wild animals into a safe and approved environment, such as the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. It should be noted that the Centre is not a rehabilitation establishment, as such. However, due to the availability of veterinary and quarantine facilities, different injured and orphaned young animals have been successfully treated.

Rehabilitation is facilitated by the attending veterinarian, as well as the curators and support staff at HESC. Where possible, animals are rehabilitated and then released in appropriate locations. Due to the nature of their injuries, animals that cannot be released after treatment are rehabilitated and accommodated at the Centre, or are transferred to other suitable institutions.

Species that have been treated at the Centre in the past include, among others, the following:

  • Elephant (Loxodonta Africana)
  • Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum)
  • Buffalo (Syncerus caffer)
  • Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)
